A friend was talking to me Australia’s National ’Sorry’ day. America, alas, has never apologised nor seems to intend to apologise, for the appalling historical attrocity - slavery.
They stole my life and destroyed my past,
They ripped my future into shreds,
They chained me and took me into foreign lands,
But that’s all in the past now.
For them.
They broke my spirit and crushed my soul,
They cast my family into the dust,
they whipped me and kicked me and whipped me again,
But that’s all in the past now.
For them.
They raped and they beat and they had all their fun,
They burned away all my self respect,
Then they washed their hands and declared us free,
But that’s all in the past now.
For them.
They sang our songs and they pretended their love,
But they made sure they never moved in next door,
They wrote up their history and sanitized it all,
And think that it’s all in the past now.
For them.
They think we are dead. Slaves of the past.
But in all of our children, live the scars of our past.
They think we are dead. Slaves of the past.
But in our children’s children, the past lives on.
